The “reWild for Hedgehogs” project asks schools to bring nature into their grounds to help hedgehogs along with lots of other wildlife as well!
Hedgehogs are one of Ireland’s most loved wild animals, but their populations are declining all across Europe. Habitat loss is one of the main reasons for this decline, making projects such as this an important way to support local biodiversity while helping young people connect with nature.
Throughout the project, students and staff take part in a range of activities designed to support local wildlife and create more hedgehog-friendly school grounds. From monitoring wildlife and raising awareness to making practical improvements to habitats by taking simple steps like planting hedgerows, adding access points to their grounds and making untidy areas.
Trail cameras and footprint tunnels are used to capture wildlife activity, giving students a unique opportunity to observe nature on their doorstep and helping the school decide on the actions they will take to add more nature to their grounds.
