Litter and Waste
The theme is a great starting point for encouraging a sense of personal pride and responsibility in tackling two visible issues in schools and communities.

Biodiversity
Biodiversity looks at steps which can be taken in schools to increase awareness of the importance of native plants, animals and habitats, and to increase species-richness in a locality.

Travel
The ultimate aim of the theme is to increase the number of students walking, cycling, scooting, using public transport or carpooling on the way to school.

Water

Water is one of the core themes of the Green-Schools programme. The Water theme looks at developing awareness around water conservation and how to effectively manage this important resource in our schools and at home. The Water theme is sponsored by Uisce Éireann.

Sustainable Development Goals

Together, Green-Schools Committees have run hundreds of awareness campaigns, clean-ups, walks for water and helped conserve millions of litres of water. What will YOU choose to do?

What is the Water theme?

Water is essential to all life. By establishing the Water theme, you will find out where your water is coming from, be mindful of how it’s used and take steps to protect our most precious resource.  

Getting started with the Water flag 

It’s your first year working on the Water theme. Your first step is to establish your Green-Schools Committee and get familiar with the Water theme. To train your Green-Schools Committee, check out the pre-recorded PowerPoint presentations below: 
Primary GS Committee in English (click here) 
Primary GS Committee in Irish (click here) 
Secondary GS Committee in English (click here) 
Once trained, you will assess your school’s water usage and survey the school community about water. This information will help you figure out what actions to take.

Applying for the Water flag 

On your 2nd year working on the water theme, you will be ready to apply for your Water flag. Make sure that: 

You’ve completed the 7-steps and have some documentation to support your application (water usage data, action plan, pictures, sample lesson plans…).

You’ve booked a renewal visit with your Environmenal Awareness Officer (or Green-Schools) before the application deadline.

You submit your application by the deadline (March 28th 2025).

Water conservation tips

Whether at home or in school try to conserve water, but remember safety comes first, wash your hands and keep your personal hygiene standards high. Saying that we can still do lots. It all starts with understanding how much water is currently used and identifying the big culprit of water wasting: leaks! More on leak detection in the new Water handbook.
