In advance of Walk to School Week 2019 and to celebrate the launch of the new Global Citizenship Travel theme, Green-Schools Travel, together with the Irish Film Institute, are hosting screenings of the beautifully observed documentary, On the Way to School. The film illustrates the lives of four young people in very different parts of the world making their daily journey to school. Across mountains, idyllic landscapes and rough terrains, the children make their way, filled with determination and united in a belief that school is a place worth making an effort to reach.

To launch the series of screenings, which will be showing in three counties across Ireland, Green-Schools Travel hosted a special event in Dublin’s Irish Film Institute on Wednesday April 16. Classes from Global Citizenship Travel Schools, St. Clare’s Primary School and Gaelscoil Lios Na nÓg, and Travel school, Central Model Senior School in Dublin City participated in a global travel activity, which quizzed their knowledge of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and sustainable travel.

After the screening, the audience participated in a Q&A to discuss the stark differences observed of the journeys made by the subjects in the film compared to typical journeys made by school children in Ireland.

Public screenings of the documentary will run in May during Walk to School Week 2019 in Dublin, Galway and Cork.
