Travel

The Travel theme is funded by the Department of Transport and supported by the National Transport Authority. The ultimate aim of the theme is to increase the number of students walking, cycling, scooting, using public transport or carpooling on the way to school.

The ultimate aim of the Travel theme is to increase the number of pupils walking, cycling, scooting, carpooling, using public transport or using park ‘n’ stride instead of the private car on the school run.

Sustainable Travel

Green-Schools Travel was rolled out nationally in September 2008 after a successful pilot programme in the Greater Dublin area. Since then we have worked, or are working, with over 1400 schools around the country to promote sustainable travel to school.

Travel Officers

Green-Schools have dedicated Travel Officers throughout the country who work closely with schools to support them through the 7 Step process of the Travel theme. These officers offer assistance with conducting your Environmental Review; beginning your Action Plan; hosting Days of Action and can help you apply for cycle training and parking for your school.

Facts & Figures

In 2023, 569 schools in Ireland were engaged in a travel programme.
88% recorded a reduction in car usage
66% recorded an increase in walking
54% recorded an increase in cycling
47% recorded an increase in bus usage
47% recorded an increase in bus usage
48% recorded an increase in park & stride
27% recorded an increase in scooting

What You Can Do

We appreciate that leaving the car at home is not always possible.

Try parking further away from the school gate and walking the last 10 minutes.
Try a WOW, COW or SOW day to celebrate walking, cycling or scooting even once a week.
Try carpooling with another family nearby. One less car at the school gate!
Even small changes can add up to a big impact. Fewer cars at the school gate means a healthier, safer front of school environment.

Travel has been a wonderful flag to work towards; it has such a positive impact and involves parents and the local community and connected everyone to their local environment more. It also promotes good health and a more active lifestyle, benefiting not just our environment but our bodies too!
