Welcome to Marine Week 2026!
Marine Week is coming back, for its 6th year!
This exciting event will take place from 20th – 24th April, with thousands of students from all over the country participating in our week of ocean fun!
Each day of Marine Week, new marine-themed activities, videos and downloadable resources will be released on the Green-Schools website. These will include five “Ocean Wonders” videos, where Green-Schools Officers explain about weird and wonderful sea creatures. This year’s we will be learning about extreme marine animals! We will be learning about the fuzziest ocean animal (the otter), the loudest (the sperm whale), the smallest (pygmy seahorse), the fastest (the sailfish) and the deepest (the snailfish). Be prepared for some mind blowing facts!
Each “Ocean Wonder” will be accompanied by a matching “Draw with Rob” video, where Green-Schools Officer, Rob, shows us how we can draw these five amazing animals. You can even upload them and try to win a prize for you, or your whole class! Share your Marine Week activities with us through social media by tagging @GreenSchoolsIre and using the hashtag #MarineWeek26
We will be announcing the winners of the National Marine Creative Writing Competition, releasing an Irish language marine presentation where you can learn a cúpla focal about marine biodiversity, and more…
On Friday, students from around the country will be taking part in the National Marine Environment Conference, which will be held in Dublin City. Students will display their marine projects and share their knowledge with each other, as well as take part in ocean themed activities.
On top of all this we will have Special Guest Webinars for primary schools Monday to Thursday at 11.15 am. Our guests speakers include:
Monday 20th April: Claire Moore, Fisheries Scientist with the Marine Institute
Tuesday 21st April: Andy Hayden, Education Officer with Water Safety Ireland
Wednesday 22nd April: Sarah Hegarty, Marine Officer with BirdWatch Ireland
Thursday 23rd April: Laura Reilly, Seismology Officer, Quake Shake
For secondary schools, we will release daily Marine Career Profiles, Famous Scientist Profiles, and Scientific Article Digests. On Thursday 23rd April we will host a live viewing of the ocean documentary “Rising Up” which shows how inspiring young people are making a difference to their oceans in their communities. This will be followed by a post-viewing discussion and presentation with one of An Taisce’s Climate Ambassadors.
We will wrap things up with a special Marine Week Quiz to test what has been learned during the week! All this and lots more – join Green-Schools for a week of fun and learning.
