Dark Skies and Nature

Green Schools are delighted to welcome Georgia MacMillan, Mayo Dark Sky Park Development Officer to this webinar to celebrate Biodiversity Week. Georgia will tell us all about Ireland’s first “International Dark Sky Park” in Mayo, the connections between dark skies and nature and some of the ways your school can get involved! Aimed at senior primary students but all welcome!

Activities

We have selected a range of indoor and outdoor activities that you can try throughout the week to celebrate all things nature! We have kept these simple and short so you can dip in and out!

Draw Along Videos
Daily Quiz!

Back in the 1930s, over 50,000 Irish school children were enlisted to talk about the folklore of their local areas. The collection was known as “The Schools Collection” or ‘Bailiúchán na Scol’ and can be found on duchas.ie.  Included in this collection are children’s description of animals, the folklore around them, the personalities they imagine they have and how they are talked about at home.

Each day this week, we are going to give you a child’s description of an Irish animal and see if you can work out what it is! Be sure to follow us on social media to find our daily question or check back here on Friday so see all put together in one video.

The descriptions will be given As Gaeilge and in English.
