Green-Schools Committee
Scoil Mhuire is a Junior School with approximately 200 students from Junior Infants up to Second class. They elect a new committee every September. Their committee is made up of teachers representing all class levels, and two students from each 1st and 2nd class – the “Mini Greens” – but they like to say that everyone in the school is a member of the Green-Schools team! The Mini Greens meet every fortnight.
Actions
Their aim for the Marine Environment flag was to educate their students to look after the marine environment from a young age, to take responsibility and to care for the environment and to be active global citizens. Scoil Mhuire have a litter rota, whereby a class group does a litter clean up on Fridays, and smaller daily litter picks are carried out every day.
They showed huge commitment to their Green Flag and carried out lots of great actions – they raised awareness on sea life, ocean habitats, threats to the marine environment, our use of the oceans, and pollution, through projects, lessons, song and dance.
Their action day, was a whole-school assembly, where different classes shared ocean facts and songs about lots of marine topics, including climate change, plastic pollution, coral reefs and overfishing.
Curriculum Links
The marine environment was integrated across the curriculum to compound the learning and this was achieved through marine life quizzes, small world play, music, visual art, P.E. movements and sharing of information between peers and between classes.
Informing and Involving
Scoil Mhuire Junior School embraced this theme with enthusiasm and energy. They extended their ideas to inspire positive change across the wider community. They sent home information to parents, asked parents to get involved in STEM in projects with the pupils, a local youth initiative created a polar bear mural in their hall, guest speakers visited the school and they took part in a community clean up with An Taisce and several other local schools. Scoil Mhuire Junior was awarded the National Marine Primary School of the Year for 2025 in recognition of all their great work – well done, Scoil Mhuire and the Mini Greens!
