About the Water Ambassador Programme

Note: Applications to the programme for 2021/22 are closed.

Green-Schools, in partnership with Irish Water, is now running its 6th year of the water ambassador programme. This programme aims to encourage active participation on the Green-Schools water theme, to educate participants on water conservation issues and equip ambassadors with the tools to spread their knowledge to the whole school community, thus increasing awareness, and improving the use and protection of our water sources.

This year’s programme started in January 2021 and will run until October 2021. Successful candidates take part in an online, interactive, training day which will involve speakers from Green-Schools, Irish Water, Clean Coasts and past ambassadors, as well as group work, demonstrations, quizzes and games.

Water ambassadors will also be able to take part in:

Green-Schools facilitated network meetings with other schools

Clean-up of a local beach, river or lake and/or water quality testing

• Virtual tour of a water or a wastewater treatment plant

A second focused support and training day

The Green-Schools co-ordinators and/or water ambassador support teachers will also receive simultaneous support, training and the opportunity to network with other coordinators.

School and student participants will receive a water pack and water ambassadors will also be in with a chance to win tablets, trophies, and vouchers.

The programme is open to all secondary level years, more than one student can apply per school, they can apply as individuals or as part of a group (max 3).

Students and coordinators will be required to complete a brief progress report in March (deadline Friday the 26th) and a short final report in October (deadline Friday the 1st) to let us know what support they may need during the programme and how they passed on their knowledge throughout the year. All students that participate in the programme will be Green-Schools Water Ambassadors however, some students will be chosen from each region as Green-Schools regional ambassadors and will be awarded at a prestigious ceremony in October 2021 where they will receive a trophy and a prize.
