Global Citizenship -
Food and biodiversity

This theme explores how growing and eating our own food impacts our personal health, and how it has knock-on impacts for local and foreign biodiversity.
Sustainable Development Goals

Global Citizenship – Food and Biodiversity is a maintenance theme that facilitates schools exploring and discovering how actions on the Green-Schools programme locally, positively influence environments worldwide.

The Global Citizenship Food and Biodiversity theme consists of two main strands of work. The first strand focuses on local actions, including growing and eating food that is produced on the school grounds. The second strand focuses on global impacts; such as the positive impact that these local actions can have, by interrupting the current global food production system, and the environmental problems associated with it e.g. by reducing the miles that food has travelled, or by avoiding the packaging waste associated with shop-bought foods.

We have seen a dramatic reduction in our electricity and oil costs. Our children are much more aware of the need to conserve energy and do this as part of their normal day. They view themselves as Global Citizens and have a greater understanding of what they have in common with children living around the world. They also have a greater awareness of the interdependence of all – and how this translates into the need to use renewable energy where possible.
