This competition is now closed and the winners have been notified
How do you want our seas and oceans to be used in the future? Tell us by entering our poster and/or 3d model competition.
We are delighted to launch the Green-Schools ‘Our Ocean, Our Plan’ Marine Spatial Planning Competition 2021. This competition will be open to Primary and Secondary Schools working on the Global Citizenship Marine Environment theme in the 2021-2022 academic year, and those that have achieved their Green Flag for the Marine Environment theme already. The deadline for entries is Friday, December 10, 2021, Wednesday, December 15th and there are some great prizes to be won!
The aim of this competition is to find out how the students of Ireland want our seas and oceans to be used in the future. This summer, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, who are supporting this competition, published Ireland’s Marine Spatial Plan – also known as the National Marine Planning Framework. Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) is a new way of looking at how we use the marine area and planning how best to use it into the future. The National Marine Framework will try to balance the different demands for using the sea including the need to protect the marine environment. It’s about planning when and where human activities take place at sea. It’s about ensuring these activities are as efficient and sustainable as possible. A factsheet about Marine Spatial Planning is included in this pack. So how do you think our oceans should be used in the future? Do you envision more recreation – more swimming, paddleboarding and surfing? Do you think we should harness the ocean’s energy and create electricity from waves? Do you think we could create more tourism around our seas? Should there be more fishing, using bigger boats, or less fishing, and smaller boats? Include things that you feel are important to our oceans, like coastal communities, protecting native animals, and marine litter. We want to hear from you!
