Team Global have been very busy this year and we would love to share some of our news with you. We were delighted so see 151 schools receiving their Green Flag for their work on the Global Citizenship Litter & Waste and the Global Citizenship Energy theme this year during our virtual Green Flag award ceremony this past May. We were especially delighted to be able to announce our Global Citizenship School of the Year awards at our successful hybrid event in Athlone last May, it was so great to be once again able to reward the excellent work done by you all in person! Massive congratulations to all 16 regional winners and to our four National winners in particular; Muinefliuch NS, SN Mhuire Letterfrack, Scoil Chríost Rí and Ballinamore CS. Keep up the great work!

We saw great engagement with our Global Goals Book Club this year, please keep an eye out for more books and activities coming in the coming year to support your work on the Global Citizenship themes.

New this year was our Global Goals Advent Calendar where we counted down the days to Christmas with short videos and activities about each of the 17 goals for sustainable development. It was so successful that we will be running it again this year so start keeping an eye on the website from November onwards!

Global Classrooms Project

Started in 2020 this international linking project has grown and developed into a fantastic opportunity for students in Ireland to engage with students from Kenya, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates in 2022.

During the project students received workshops on the Global Goals for Sustainable Development through the designathon methodology which focusses on building confidence, increasing knowledge and skills, increasing critical thinking and communication skills and developing agency with your students to take action on complex global challenges creating future leaders for change.

Through a series of exciting events and workshops we supported the students from 29 Irish primary schools to develop 240 innovative creations and prototypes to help take action on climate change and on other SDG’s and supported their work on the Global Citizenship themes. Our partner schools in Kenya, South Africa and UAE also learnt about the Global Goals and we shared our knowledge at a fantastic final, virtual event in June 2022. We are already looking forward to engaging with all the schools in these countries this coming year!

Global Goals Week

As part of our Global Classrooms project, we ran a week long festival for the goals during our inaugural Global Goals week. This week saw a daily one-hour engagement with schools in all participating countries on various goals culminating in a final day of student engagement whereby students were able to directly speak with and learn from each other. We will be running the Global Goals week again this academic year in February 2023.

Let’s Fix Fashion

Also new this year was our Let’s Fix Fashion Campaign for secondary schools working on the Global Citizenship themes. A year long series of virtual events and webinars engaging students in learning about the problems associated with the fashion industry and encouraging them to take action for sustainable fashion in their own schools culminated in a fantastic final catwalk event in May 2022. Keep an eye out! We will be running this campaign for secondary schools again this coming year!

Global Children’s Designathon

Our collaboration with Designathon Works based in the Netherlands has deepened again this past year and we were delighted to be able to participate in their Global Children’s Designathon series of designathons and events with 6 schools based in Cork County this year. Each class had a Designathon workshop delivered at their school by Green-Schools and were then inspired to research problems and then: ideate, sketch and create prototypes of their solutions to the extreme complex global problems around ecosystem restoration and climate action. On the final day they were able to present their prototypes to a panel of experts including Mayor, Cllr. Gillian Coughlan as the guest of honour. We look forward to being able to work with Designathon Works again this year so keep an eye out for opportunities to be involved this year.

Teacher Training Summer Course

Finally, we were absolutely thrilled to be able to deliver our teacher training summer course “Green-Schools and the Global Goals” in person once again this year! Ten teachers had a fabulous experience learning about how their work on the Green-Schools programme in their schools supports the SDGs. We will be applying to Drumcondra Education Center to get next year’s summer course approved once again so please don’t forget us when it comes to picking your course for your 3 EPV days next year! The sun always shines during our week!

Please watch our short video below on last year’s activities. We hope you can join us this year!
