Walk for Water 2019 / World Water Day

22 March 2019

Wednesday March 22 is World Water Day.

World Water Day is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. Today, there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home. You will already be familiar with the Sustainable Development Goals (aka Global Goals), launched in 2015, which include a target to ensure everyone has access to safe water by 2030, making water a key issue in the fight to eradicate extreme poverty.

The theme for World Water Day 2019 is ‘Leaving no one behind’. This is an adaptation of the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: as sustainable development progresses, everyone must benefit.

As Green-Schools, your work on the theme of Water is helping to spread awareness of the Global Goals and of water issues locally and across the world. A great way to bring this message to your wider school and community is to organise a Walking for Water event. Walking for Water involves walking six kilometres with six litres of water (distance and weight can be adapted for younger students) to highlight the average distance walked in countries with issues of water scarcity by women and children to access clean water.

You can download a link to organising your own Walking for Water event on our resources page (pdf file / jpeg file). If you do hold an event let us know – tweet/Instagram us @GreenSchoolsIre or post to our Facebook page. (Use #worldwaterday #walkingforwater)
