Primary Harvest Week – June 2022

The Green-Schools Food and Biodiversity Team is delighted to invite you to a week-long Harvest celebration, taking place from Monday 13rd June to Friday 17th June. We have an exciting line-up of talks, workshops, discussions, and cook-alongs, taking place.  Scroll down to access resources for all age groups, and activities.  

 The Competitions

This week we want to hear from you and see how your school got on growing your own vegetables. We recently announced some fun competitions, which you can still enter! The categories are: 

  • The Wonkiest Vegetable 
  • The Most Peas in a Pod, and 
  • Best kept Food & Biodiversity Garden 

Entries can be sent in the form of emailed photographs to cpatten@eeu.antaisce.org and/or via tags on social media using: @GreenSchoolsIre and #wonkyveg. Winners will be announced during the week.  

The Live Sessions

The Live sessions are open to all GC Food and Biodiversity theme schools to attend . These will take place through zoom on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday at 11am. You can invite as many classes in your school as you like for the session(s) that catch your eye. Please use the registration page (which was sent by email to all “Food and Biodiversity” schools) to sign up for the live events. Recordings of the live sessions will be made available below, for all schools to enjoy thereafter.   

The Timetable 

 All of the information you need about our live sessions, pre-recorded videos and activities can be found below. 

Monday

  • Unfortunately, Monday’s live “Sensory and Tasting” session did not take place as planned. You can still carry out this workshop with your class using our lesson plan.
  • Senior Primary Activity: Get ready for the week by practicing your cooking skills. Watch and follow along with our skills videos on setting up your cooking area safely, chopping and peeling. Make sure you eat whatever you practise on! Why not make a dip to go with your veg, see page 11 here 

Tuesday

  • Outdoor Activity: Head outside on a nature food walk. See what edible plants you can find growing in the wild in our around your school grounds. Remember, you should never eat anything you find unless you are sure what it is! Use our Foraging in Schools Guide to help you! 
  • Cooking activity: Use some of the food you have harvested from your garden to prepare a recipe. Try one of our “cook along videos” to guide you. Choose from Strawberry Salad, Patatas Bravas, Rainbow wraps or any of our other recipes. 

Wednesday

Unfortunately we were unable to hold our planned live webinar on Wednesday morning, apologies. Instead why not check out these videos to see how food is grown around the country by some amazing farmers in these videos made by Farming for Nature:

Thursday

  • Live Webinar at 11am. “Sustainability and Food” Cooking Demonstration” with Chef Audrey. Join us for a demonstration of a delicious dish you can cook at home and to get some tips on how to cook in a sustainable way. No ingredients or equipment needed.  
  • Activity: Try your hand at our Global Food Issues Quiz to see how much you know about the impact our diets have on the planet. 

Friday

  • Live webinar at 11am. “Veggie Pasta Cook Along” with Chef Reema. Follow on with a professional chef and prepare a delicious pasta dish. Cooking equipment and ingredients are required. Full info and recipe will be sent in advance. Most suitable for senior primary. You are also welcome to watch as a demonstration. 
  • Activity for Jr Primary Jr Primary Video, Draw with Rob: Strawberry
