This is a 15 teacher school in the town of Clonakilty, with 245 pupils. They began their quest for the Green Flag in 2002. Since then they have achieved their First Green Flag for Waste Management, our Second for Energy and now have received their Third for Water.

Each class was in charge of different aspects of the work for the Water theme. Water, Litter and Energy Patrols take place each day. Rotas exist for composting, bird-feeding, paper towels, toilet rolls and recycling. Once a month we review the results of their patrol workers, which are recorded. We they award the "Greenest Cleanest Class Award".

St. Joseph’s GNS have reduced the amount of water used in the school by inserting "Toilet Hippos" in their 20 toilets.

The cisterns contain 10 litres of water. They discovered that they used 3190 litres of water per day, on toilets alone! They now save 319 litres per day.

Because of their proximity to the sea they decided to use their amenities to add to their knowledge of the Theme of Water. Four projects were completed:

3rd Class - Water Treatment;

4th Class - Bird Watching in Clonakilty Bay;

5th Class - Water Safety and

6th Class - Inchydoney Blue Flag Beach.

It has now come to their notice that last years 6th Class - (now in 1st Year in the Secondary School) - have initiated the Green School Programme in their school.
